It amazes me that, to this day, many people see Lucille Ball as little more than the hairbrained character she played on I Love Lucy. Not only was she smart, but she was a savvy business woman as well.
I just found out that in 1957, (albeit with her husband Desi Arnaz), she purchased RKO Pictures - and as a result, owned more sound stages that year than either Metro Goldwyn Mayer or Twentieth Century Fox.
I think it a crying shame that smart, savvy women from her era didn't always get the real due they deserved. At the very least, we remember her for the brilliant comedienne that she was, but it would be nice if we could see beyond that to the truly intelligent woman she was as well.
